Butter

Now if there was ever an inspiration for an aspiring screenwriter, it is this film ‘Butter’, written by Jason A. Micallef, who won a Nicholl Fellowship with the same script in 2008.

Starring Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell and Hugh Jackman, Butter is a comedy about the experts in butter carving an sculptures.  With the quirky and neurotic character of Laura Pickler, Garner shines in the role.

Be prepared for hilarious and outrageous scenes which aren’t always politically correct, -making even more shockingly laugh out loud.

Cloud Atlas

With a phenomenal ensemble cast including actors such as  Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump), Halle Berry (Monster’s Ball), Susan Sarandon (Thelma and Louise), Hugo Weaving (Matrix), Hugh Grant (Notting Hill) and Jim Broadbent (Iris), ‘Cloud Atlas’ has caused quite a stir with its ambiguous trailer.

Written by the writers of ‘The Matrix’, ‘Cloud Atlast’ is taking its audience from one era to another, from one continent to another, this film appears to incorporate a mix of genres that is unexpected, in a good way.  You will be in awe of the imagery, the grand scale of the production and the profound message it seems to want to convey.

A message which basically reminds us how connected we are to one another and how our actions can affect so much more than we could possibly imagine, the affect, potentially spanning many a lifetime.  Cloud Atlas looks at how a soul can be a killer but then only to be reborn as a hero in the next life time, and how kindness really is the key power tool in saving the world.

Sounds too good to be true?  Well let’s hope it lives up to its huge expectations, because if it does, I have a feeling this may be a film that may go down in history, one of those films that people talk about generation after generation, greater than a classic, but more of an epiphany for mankind.

Cloud Atlas opens in cinemas on October 26, 2012.

Paranormal Activity 4

Featuring the young girls Katie and Kristi from Paranormal Activity 3 in home video, it looks like Katie’s character will be reprised in this version too.

With exceptional use of the “home video” style shooting, Paranormal Activity 4 shows a girl Skyping her friend as a shadow teleports from outside her home to right behind her (see photo above).

What always amazes me about this film franchise is how they bend and play with your mind so much that we as an audience create the horror inside our own heads and all the film needs to do this is to include clever use of imagery and sound.  -SOUND is what really creates emotion and in particular, horror and terror.  -Watch Alfred Hitchcock classics for examples of how he uses sound and music to really terrify us.  Watch any horror movie on mute and the effect will mostly be lost.

‘The Blair Witch Project’ is the film that really started off this “reality” horror type craze in films, and ever since, they has been some of the most successful horror films in the industry.  Take into account the low budget needed to make the films and then the huge Box Office success it brings, it’s a no-brainer as to why projects such as these are in demand.

I’d say take that into account when writing your next horror script, production companies will more likely love the fact that your script will cost next to nothing to make but may reap in millions of profit for them.

Some things to consider when writing a low budget reality horror script:

*Minimize the locations (one room or one house is key)

*Minimize the characters

*Maximize visual keys for horror effect

*Maximize and detail key sound/noises for horror effect

*Add in unexpected twists and never-been-seen-before  scenes (Remember Paranormal Activity 3, where she left the fully furnished room, only to come back in and see all the furniture had disappeared before falling down from above).
